In January 2008, the Steps Community Agriculture and Food Policy Teams coordinated the Clark County Food System Summit: "Connecting Food, Farm and the Community." This workshop provided a venue for city and county planners, elected officials, restaurateurs, farmers, public health leaders, health systems representatives to wrestle with issues that threaten the local food supply and to debate potential solutions to our local agricultural concerns. Ken Meter, president of Crossroads Resource Center in Minneapolis and keynote speaker for the summit, shared research on the local agricultural economy. A panel of experts from the local food system represented differing perspectives on the questions of food security and sustainability. Summit participants had the opportunity to share their perspectives during small group discussion. Insights and issues were communicated to the Clark County Food System Council for follow-up. |
