Title:

Student Store Marketing Challenge

Audience:

Clark County High School Students, Teachers and Parents.

What:

Steps Access to Healthy Food Team conducted half day workshops to promote solutions for selling healthy foods and beverages in local student-run high school stores. The workshop helped students and teachers realize that healthy foods and beverages can be sold successfully. A Healthy Student Store Marketing Challenge was launched to help motivate participants to implement healthier products in their stores. Students researched, developed and implemented marketing and education campaigns to promote healthier products in their student store operations. Cash awards were given to the top 3 schools in the competition.

Result:

Heritage High School's first place campaign built on the concept of adding breakfast options to the school store's existing lunch and snack menu. Heritage implemented a multi-dimensional marketing plan that included sales training, direct advertising through announcements and video, posters, incentives, and punch cards to earn free meals. A complimentary educational campaign was also conducted by the students. End-of-year sales for 2006/2007 were nearly $2000 higher than the previous year. Hudson's Bay High School introduced fruit smoothies and reduced portion sizes on several products to increase profits by nearly $1000 for the school year. Battleground High School revamped their store with new colors and added smoothies, salads and other healthy products.
