Steps Initiatives - Access to Healthy Foods

To reduce the incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Clark County by assuring access to healthy food options that are affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate throughout the community.

Title:

Clark County Food System Council

Audience:

Clark County food system stakeholder, Community Leaders and Clark County residents.

What:

Over a year in development, the Clark County Food System Council resulted from a 2006 community workshop coordinated by Community Choices/Steps to a Healthier Clark County (Steps) entitled "Healthy Food Forecast: What is Your Role?" Workshop participants supported the concept of creating a local food policy council to advise and guide local policy makers regarding potential solutions to gaps in the local food system.

A Steps-facilitated Food Policy Team responded by researching potential council models, drafting initial framework and presenting the concept to Clark County Public Health. With a commitment from Steps to coordinate the initial development of the council, Clark County Public Health agreed to house the Clark County Food System Council and fund its efforts after the Steps grant. The Council's 18 members represent diverse aspects of the local food system.

Under the direction of the Council, a community food assessment to identify gaps in the local food system was undertaken to inform the Council and drive future efforts.

Result:

Completion of the Clark County community food assessment. Fully functioning Council successfully transitioned to Public Health in September 2008.
