Description

The BRFSS indicates that obesity, diabetes and asthma has increased in Clark County and is higher than both Washington State and US averages. There is a need to involve and educate community leaders, organizations, health systems, schools, employers and residents of Clark County .

The Steps to a Healthier Clark County website is designed as a resource specifically for Clark County residents, organizations and community leaders.

The primary goal of the website project was to provide resources for the community on how to live a healthier lifestyle and how the Steps Coalition is making a difference in Clark County . This was achieved by creating a gateway specifically for Clark County residents, pulling together information about: the county's health profile, obesity, diabetes, asthma, local events, and Steps programs. The home page is designed to have easy access to healthy resources in our community and on the internet.

Implications and Impact of activity described: describe the impact on data, policies, etc.

Dryke & Associates will measure website activity.

Community Choices will document number and type of phone calls resulting from the website.

It is anticipated that this tool will be a helpful resource for clinical provider's offices in terms of a community referral source for physical activity, nutrition and smoking prevention. Physicians have requested a central location which describes what is available in the community (non-medical) for their patients with obesity, diabetes and asthma.

Already we have heard from a physician who utilized the website that: “the website is fantastic. It combines basic health education information with local resources for activity, healthy eating and related activities in the community”.

Describe the activity as an accomplishment or success, a promising practice, or a “lesson learned,” or a demonstration of a “best practice”: Would you recommend this activity for other communities? Why?

It's a single resource designed for Clark County residents that prominently displays physical activities, resources and events, as well as health-related workshops and more. The www.stepstoahealthierclarkco.org website provides quick and easy access for Clark County residents who are ready to:

enjoy good nutrition, lead active lives and live in healthy communities;

choose a healthy lifestyle;

participate in thirty minutes of physical activity daily;

eat five to nine fruits and vegetables a day;

support indoor and outdoor smoke-free environments.

Describe how this activity relates to sustainable policy change in your community, if applicable.

Creates connectivity of physical activity and access to healthy food for everyone in the community. It is an informational approach to a mass media campaign.
